It was not a season to remember for Chepauk Super Gillies as the Champions of second edition had to bow out of the League stages with just one victory. But, with this young squad, there are many noteworthy points which will be taken down as the season comes to drawing curtains.
The Gillies kicked off this season at MA Chidambaram Stadium on July 14th. But, things did not start well as Gopinath’s side were beaten by a margin of 31 runs. Baskaran Rahul was the standout performer in this game for the Gillies with a knock of 53.
Hoping for the change of fortune at a different venue, Chepauk played their second game against Siechem Madurai Panthers at Tirunelveli. But, batting was the biggest letdown in this game as it scrumbled for 127, chasing a total of 153. Murugan Ashwin was the pickout of the players as he picked up 3 wickets and conceded just 24 runs in the process.
Returning to home, Chepauk wanted to things back on track. But, the batsmen had a daunting task ahead of themselves as they had to score 194 in a ground which is bowler friendly. Skipper Gopinath stood up to the occasion by bagging 47 runs, but it was quite enough for the defending Champions as they lost the game yet again.
The next game saw Chepauk Super Gillies taking on Lyca Kovai Kings at Tirunelveli. Electing to bat, the Kings put up a total of 158 on board. But, the Gillies were not able to chase down that target in tough conditions. Star player for the Gillies was Murugan Ashwin by notching up a wicket and 36 runs.
Tuti Patriots was the next opponent. That was another outing to forget, as the Reds lost that game by 7 wickets, who chased down the total of 169. Harish Kumar with 12ball-27 and with a wicket was the star performer.
Dindigul proved to be the lucky venue for Chepauk yet again. They were able to register the first victory against VB Kanchi Veerans by 13 runs at NPR College Ground on July 31st. S Karthik hammered 13 boundaries to take his score to 76, which proved to be the gamechanger.
The last game in this years edition was against Dindigul Dragons. It was quite a disappointing match as the Gillies lost it by 9 wickets. Aarif’s 36 runs from 34 ball is another note taking performance.
Contributions always have effect on games. Captain rose to the occasion by registering 176 runs throughout the tournament, and with the ball, Murugan Ashwin is the leading wicket taker with 8 wickets for the defending champions.
Expectations was sky high when the Gillies entered into this season, but it turned out to be a disappointment. However, Chepauk Super Gillies will look forward and redeem themselves for the upcoming campaign.
