The defending Champions Chepauk Super Gillies took on Ruby Trichy Warriors in the game 3 of the Tamil Nadu Premier League at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. However, it did not go as planned for the Gillies as they were beaten by 31 runs by the table toppers.
Star performer for the Gillies last season, Gopinath took incharge as the captain for the first time. Winning the toss, Chepauk skipper decided to bowl first. The likes of Rahul, Sasidev, Alexander and Karthik kept their place in the starting lineups. Whereas, debut were handed to Vishal, Siddharth, Ganga Sridhar Raju, Murugan Ashwin and Sunny Kumar Singh. Our opponents named an unchanged eleven following their first victory over Dindigul Dragons.
Bharath Shankar and Baba Indrajith were the openers for Ruby Trichy Warriors. The former was scoring at a very fast rate only to fall to Vishal’s delivery. The later formed a comprehensive partnership with Suresh Kumar worth 110 runs to stabilise the batting for the Warriors. Indrajith scored 53 runs of 50 balls, whereas Suresh Kumar bagged 6 sixes to take his tally to 74 for the night. The partnership finally fell when Siddarth bowled out Indrajith in the 19th over. The fast armer Vishal took another one by taking the wicket of Suresh Kumar. Ganapathy Chandrasekar scored at a rate of 520 to settle a total of 180 for our opponents.
Openers Gopinath and Arun Kumar produced a very good start by scoring 12 runs during the first over. Ganapathy’s first over saw Arun Kumar paving his way for Ganga Sridhar Raju. But four wickets within 40 runs put Chepauk under severe pressure, with Karthik, dismissed by Ganapathy, also joined the list in heading to the pavilion. Subsequently, a 62 run stand from Sasidev and Rahul gave some lingering hope for the hosts. But, Vignesh’s excellent yorker ended Sasidev’s wonderful cameo of 30 runs. On the other end, Rahul scored a half century to boost the scorecard, but that ended when he was dismissed by Sonu Yadav. Followingly, Murugan Ashwin, Sunny Kumar Singh, Vishal, Siddharth and Alexander added 28 runs which was not efficient enough for the Gillies. Ganapathy stood out for our opponents by picking up 5 wickets.
There might be various changes in the team, but with the same goal as last season’s, Hemang Badani’s side will head in to the next game against Madurai on Monday.
