Tamil Nadu take on Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy as the new season kicks off at Dindigul today. There is no doubt about the hosts who have one of the best squads to go on and challenge for the title. The likes of Abhinav Mukund, Murali Vijay, Vijay Shankar, Washington Sundar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik are included alongside the former Chepauk bowler Sai Kishore. It has been exactly 30 years since the South Indian state has lifted this prized accolade. Since then, Tamil Nadu have failed to clear the final hurdle as they have been runners-up on six different occasions. Henceforth, the players are geared up to make it count this campaign.
The addition of the Chepauk Super Gillies all-rounder Vijay Shankar increases the cutting edge and team’s proficiency with the ball and bat. Having scored more than 1700 runs at an average of 47, and with 29 wickets from 34 games, the 27-year-old is expected to play a pivotal role in the squad. After having a dismal time by missing out on the Tamil Nadu Premier League this season, the all-rounder will be determined to make it count for the state team. In the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, Abhinav Mukund was the leading scorer for the team with 560 runs from 9 innings, mustering four 50’s and one century.
Additionally, Ravichandran Ashwin, Murali Vijay and Dinesh Karthik experience who have played tons of international cricket will be hoping to assist the team by putting in good performances. The destructive brothers Baba Indrajith and Baba Aparajith were the leading scorers for Tamil Nadu in the last Ranji Trophy campaign. Jagadeesan’s protection behind the stumps and Mohammed’s hard hitting and the capability to swing the ball is another added incentive. SQUAD: Baba Indrajith (Captain), Murali Vijay, Abhinav Mukund, Jagatheesan Kousik, Rohit Raj, Balanchander Anirudh, Dinesh Karthik (WK), N Jagadeesan (WK), Vijay Shankar, Baba Aparajith, Washington Sundar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravichandran Sai Kishore, Rahil Shah, M Mohammed, Abhishek Tanwar.
